On This Day 80 Years Ago
Edward Norman (Ned) Petty-Fitzmaurice, aged 22, youngest son of the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne and the Marchioness of Lansdowne was killed in action in Normandy. Educated at Eton College, he was commissioned into the Irish Guards and gained the rank of Lieutenant.

Wildlife In The Wetlands
Since the early 1960s Bowood Estate has been reporting to the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust (WWT) and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) a monthly count providing data for population size and trends in distribution.

Pondtail Bridge Restoration
On the night of the 11th of January 2023 following a period of sustained rainfall (41.2mm of rain was recorded falling on the 11th) the north elevation and downstream side of Pondtail Bridge on the Bowood Estate partially collapsed into the lake.

15 Year Anniversary of the Bowood Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort
In 2000, a plan was drawn up for a 149-bed hotel along with a 9-hole extension of the golf course. Planning permission was granted two years later, it was eventually decided to design a smaller hotel and spa reflecting Bowood Estates unique character.

Nature Matters at Bowood
To create the lake at Bowood, Capability Brown, landscape designer (1716-1783), dammed two streams and moved a small hamlet called Mannings Hill to the nearby village of Sandy Lane. It was a vast undertaking, and the construction took five years.

Restoration of Coade Stone Vases
For nearly a quarter of a century, a pair of remarkable early Coade vases, have flanked the main entrance to Bowood House from the Italianate terrace. In need of quite extensive restoration, the vases were placed into the care of Stephen Pettifer and his team at Coade who were commissioned to carry out the work.
