- Sessions work best with around 20 pupils so we usually divide larger classes into smaller groups to keep everyone actively involved.

- We can deliver a maximum of three sessions in a day by rotating 20 (approx.) with a break in between.
- We can arrange a bespoke plan for the day to meet the needs of your curriculum objectives.
Example itinerary based on 60 pupils (two classes of 30)
- Meet at the carpark
- Walk all belongings to the Gardener’s Bothy (classroom base)
- Split into three smaller groups
- Groups rotate throughout the day:
- An educational session based on plants in the Walled Garden

- Time in the adventure playground
- Time is planned in for lunch and breaks
- We arrange a bespoke plan for the day to meet the needs of your curriculum objectives and encourage children to make links in their learning.
- It is incredibly useful, (especially for younger pupils), if within each group of 20, there are smaller groups of 4 or 5 each led by a designated adult.
Instructions for Lead Teachers:

- Once the coach is parked, please confirm the number of students and adults with our staff. Maps will be distributed.

We ask that visiting schools complete their own risk assessment before coming to Bowood. We’re happy to support you with this and can share our own risk assessments if helpful. Please note that there are areas of open water on site, so your Local Authority may need to approve your plans. Teachers are warmly invited to make a familiarisation visit ahead of their trip and we are happy to offer a complimentary pass for two members of staff to explore the grounds and plan their day.
A First Aid Hut is located within the Adventure Playground, behind the Kiosk. All departments on site are equipped with first aid kits; however, you may find it more practical to bring your own compact kit, including any individual children’s inhalers and prescribed medication.
Most pathways throughout Bowood House & Gardens are gravelled, with some cobbled sections. The areas near The Gardener’s Bothy are generally flat, though certain parts of the grounds include steep inclines that may become slippery in wet weather. These areas are clearly marked on the site map.
The Gardener’s Bothy has a single step at the main entrance and an assessable ramp to the left-hand side.
While most of the gardens are wheelchair accessible, please note that the Rose Gardens on the lower terrace are not. The ground floor of Bowood House is accessible to standard-sized wheelchairs.
The House, gardens and grounds are shared with members of the public. We understand that visitors with additional needs may require more detailed information. Please don’t hesitate to contact our staff to discuss any specific requirements

BOWOOD HOUSE & GARDENS SESSIONS
Step into a world where nature excels in the most remarkable ways at Bowood House & Gardens. Embark on a journey where learning literally comes alive.
‘Sleeping Seeds’ (EYFS & KS1)
– With adaptable content for younger or older students, this session exposes children to a wide variety ofseeds and plants around the grounds of Bowood. From identifying living and non-living things to determining what a seed or plant needsto survive. An exciting and engaging introduction to the wonders of our natural world.
‘Roots and Shoots’ (Lower KS2)
– By comparing plants and discussing environmental changes, children can explore how growth can be changed or altered. We look into the functional features in a variety of plants throughout the vast gardens and hidden depths of the arboretum.
‘Leaves and Lungs’ (Upper KS2)
– The scientific processes of gas exchange and the co-dependency between animals and plants can be seenbefore your very eyes. We bring history to life based on the incredible discovery of oxygen by Joseph Priestley and leave you in awe of his phenomenal work.
THE CYCLE OF LIFE SESSIONS
Join us for an enchanting school visit to Bowood’s Walled Gardens, where the magic of nature surrounds you and you are immersed in every stage of ‘The Cycle of Life.’
‘Seed Searching’ (EYFS & KS1)
– Within the walled gardens, children can investigate how different plants produce different seeds and how the power of nature enables them to be carried far and wide. The life cycle of a plant is seen in all stages while in the safe and secure enclosed garden.
‘Birds and Bees’ (Lower KS2)
– The vital role of insects and minibeasts in the process of plant reproduction is witnessed first hand within the walled gardens. Vibrant colours and sweet smells support the fertilisation process and children can peep in between petals to identify there productive parts of a flower.
‘Pollinate or Propagate’ (Upper KS2)
– The walled gardens are the perfect place to investigate how different plants reproduce. Fromskipping out the seed cycle, sending out runners and grafting fruit trees; it can all be discovered within our four gardens. Propagating plants and nurturing them to grow is an opportunity not to be missed.
A SENSE OF WONDER
‘A Sense of Wonder’ at Bowood’s Walled Gardens promises a day of delight, discovery, and memories that will linger long after the visit ends. Come along and let your senses dance in the realm of nature’s beauty.
‘Sights and Smells’ (EYFS & KS1)
– A session designed for children to stop and see every small detail in the safety of our garden, from patterns to shapes and more. Familiar smells and discovering where they come from is also a delightful way to illustrate the uses of plants in our everyday life.
‘Taste and Touch’ (Lower KS2)
– The walled gardens are bursting with flavour which we can’t wait to share with you. A world of textures and sensations are desperate to be touched under the watchful eye of our guides. This session invites children to brave the unknown and trust their super senses.
‘Five Senses’ (Upper KS2)
– This session asks big questions to provoke debates on plants being helpful or harmful to our bodies. We put oursenses to the test and see if they are good at keeping us safe from harm. A powerful session that aims to educate children on theincredible substances plants can produce.
OVERVIEW OF ALL SESSIONS
Although sessions can take place in isolation, we recommend booking 3 visits across the year to truly see the changes in nature and build on previous knowledge and understanding.

Testimonials
Everything was perfect. Even catered and adapted learning for the damp weather. Children absolutely loved their day. Excellent service. (A child said) “It was amazing. Best school trip ever!” Thank you, once again, for a well organised and stress-free school trip.
Oliver Tomkins Infant School, Swindon – May 2025
Their favourite part of the day was visiting the Sensory Garden. They enjoyed learning about how plants can be dangerous to humans, how to help pollinate plants and about male and female trees. Gina was fab with the kids. As always.
Home Educators – June 2025
The preparation and communication prior to the visit was excellent and made for an educational and well organised trip. Gina was very knowledgeable and built a good rapport with the children. The children loved using the maps and going through the caves! We had a fantastic day!
Derry Hill Primary School - May 2025
For the students to hear from employees during their visit, particularly the curator and painter and decorator. Also to see the facilities and consider how they link to the curriculum. It was great seeing the grounds and house for real, rather than just in photos and for the pupils to take their notes whilst on the tour rather than just sat in the classroom.
Kingsbury Green Academy, Calne – Year 9 Careers Ambassadors
The whole day was perfect. The educational part was pitched at the correct level and kept the children's interest all the way through. All staff were very polite and very helpful. They really enjoyed planting the seeds to take home. Children are still talking about their plants and bringing photos into school to show how big they are getting.
Oliver Tomkins Infant School, Swindon – May 2024
The children loved the walled garden and planting seeds. The sleeping seeds talk was pitched perfectly at their level and it was great that some Joseph Priestly information was added to suit our curriculum needs. The children loved the play area and grounds and it felt safe and engaging. They all loved the park! One child said "It was the best day out ever!" Wonderful day out and Gina was approachable, organised and great with the children! Thanks so much.
Cherhill CE Primary School – July 2024
Lady was fabulous. She spoke to everyone individually at some point, went with the flow of the group and made changes where necessary. Can't rate her highly enough. Will definitely be back for future sessions.
Home Educator – October 2024
The teacher was very knowledgeable and understanding that some children may not come to sit with the group. The way she handled it meant that the child was then able to join the group when ready which they wouldn’t have done if there was any pressure too.
Home Educator – October 2024
