Educational Visits to Bowood House & Gardens

Education and Schools

Inspire curiosity, confidence and care for the natural world at Bowood

We are proud to welcome schools and home educators from our local community and beyond. Our curriculum adjacent educational sessions are designed to support and extend learning beyond the classroom. We see children flourish outdoors and within our beautiful Walled Garden they will find seeds, explore plants, observe wildlife and learn what makes each plant special. These precious moments mark the beginning of understanding how plants help us feel good and why it’s important to nurture and look after them. Whether looking up at enormous Champion trees in the Arboretum, strolling among seasonal flowers, exploring the Walled Garden, visiting Bowood House and its inspiring art gallery, or letting off steam in our Adventure Playground, every part of the visit is filled with fun and discovery.

Wander through Bowood’s Walled Garden including the Sensory Garden and colourful pollinating meadows to discover where seeds hide and how plants grow. Children get hands-on with nature, exploring textures, smells and the secrets of plant life. From spotting seeds in surprising places to learning what helps them travel, wake up and grow, this session nurtures curiosity and connects young learners with the wonders of the natural world.

Pollinate or Propagate (KS2 Science and Nature)

They will begin by dissecting a variety of flowers from Bowood’s Walled Garden, identifying key parts and appreciating differences in colour, shape and symmetry. Pupils will then observe pollination in action in the pollinator meadows and learn about sexual and asexual reproduction using real-life examples from the Sensory Garden and Greenhouses. Finally, they will investigate propagation methods such as grafting and runners. Layers of the Landscape (KS2 Art History)

Bring your classroom learning to life with our creative Landscape Art session at Bowood House & Gardens.  The session takes place in Bowood House’s historic gallery, where pupils explore a range of landscape paintings and discover how artists use colour, line, shape, texture and space to capture places and environments around them. Pupils then step outside into the breathtaking ‘Capability’ Brown-designed parkland, taking time to explore the landscape as they observe and record their surroundings. Inspired by nature, they’ll create their own landscape artwork in this unique and creative outdoor setting.

Creating Curators (KS2 History, Heritage and Careers)

Pupils will step into the past as they journey through Bowood House on a walking timeline, discovering how key historical events connect to the Estate. From Joseph Priestley’s oxygen discovery to WWI’s Red Cross hospital and Queen Victoria’s wedding chair to Georgian fashion, history comes alive through real stories. If you have a specific topic or subject in mind, such as photography, creative writing, careers or wellbeing, our team is here to help you bring it to life. The Grounds offer a wealth of opportunities for unique and enriching learning experiences for all ages, from nursery children to.

For example, did you know that Lord Shelburne, once Prime Minister of Britain, helped negotiate peace at the end of the American Revolutionary War? He may have secretly stayed in touch with Benjamin Franklin the whole time! In 2026, the new exhibition in Bowood House “1776: Secrets, Spies and the American Revolution” explores both politics and relationships, as well as delving into the world of eighteenth-century espionage and the clever ways people used invisible ink and hidden notes to share top-secret information. Perfect for curious minds and budding historians!

Teachers are warmly invited to make a familiarisation visit ahead of their trip and we are happy to offer a complimentary pass for two members of staff to explore the grounds and plan their day.

A First Aid Hut is located within the Adventure Playground, behind the Ice Cream Kiosk. All departments on site are equipped with first aid kits; however, you may find it more practical to bring your own compact kit, including any individual children’s inhalers and prescribed medication.

Most pathways throughout Bowood House & Gardens are gravelled, with some cobbled sections. The areas near the Gardener’s Bothy are generally flat, though certain parts of the grounds include steep inclines that may become slippery in wet weather. These areas are clearly marked on the site map.

The Gardener’s Bothy has a single step at the main entrance and an assessable ramp to the left-hand side.

While most of the gardens are wheelchair accessible, please note that the Rose Gardens on the lower terrace are not. The ground floor of Bowood House is accessible to standard-sized wheelchairs.

The House, Gardens and Grounds are shared with members of the public. We understand that visitors with additional needs may require more detailed information. Please don’t hesitate to contact our staff to discuss any specific requirements

Testimonials

Everything was perfect. Even catered and adapted learning for the damp weather. Children absolutely loved their day. Excellent service. (A child said) “It was amazing. Best school trip ever!” Thank you, once again, for a well organised and stress-free school trip.

Oliver Tomkins Infant School, Swindon – May 2025

Their favourite part of the day was visiting the Sensory Garden. They enjoyed learning about how plants can be dangerous to humans, how to help pollinate plants and about male and female trees. Gina was fab with the kids. As always.

Home Educators – June 2025

The preparation and communication prior to the visit was excellent and made for an educational and well organised trip. Gina was very knowledgeable and built a good rapport with the children. The children loved using the maps and going through the caves! We had a fantastic day!

Derry Hill Primary School - May 2025

For the students to hear from employees during their visit, particularly the curator and painter and decorator. Also to see the facilities and consider how they link to the curriculum. It was great seeing the grounds and house for real, rather than just in photos and for the pupils to take their notes whilst on the tour rather than just sat in the classroom.

Kingsbury Green Academy, Calne – Year 9 Careers Ambassadors

The whole day was perfect. The educational part was pitched at the correct level and kept the children's interest all the way through. All staff were very polite and very helpful. They really enjoyed planting the seeds to take home. Children are still talking about their plants and bringing photos into school to show how big they are getting.

Oliver Tomkins Infant School, Swindon – May 2024

The children loved the walled garden and planting seeds. The sleeping seeds talk was pitched perfectly at their level and it was great that some Joseph Priestly information was added to suit our curriculum needs. The children loved the play area and grounds and it felt safe and engaging. They all loved the park! One child said "It was the best day out ever!" Wonderful day out and Gina was approachable, organised and great with the children! Thanks so much.

Cherhill CE Primary School – July 2024

Lady was fabulous. She spoke to everyone individually at some point, went with the flow of the group and made changes where necessary. Can't rate her highly enough. Will definitely be back for future sessions.

Home Educator – October 2024

The teacher was very knowledgeable and understanding that some children may not come to sit with the group. The way she handled it meant that the child was then able to join the group when ready which they wouldn’t have done if there was any pressure too.
